Three major 5G frequency bands

5G needs spectrum within three key frequency ranges to deliver widespread coverage and support all use cases. Those three ranges are 26/28GHz (high), 3.3GHz to 4.9GHz (medium) and 2GHz and under (low).

5G Network coverage

Our truly genuine 5G network now covers 90% of outdoor areas% in Hong Kong, as well as 99.5%# of the Golden Bowl and main business district. Our 5G network also covers the interiors of Hong Kong International Airport and major shopping malls.

We are the first mobile operator to provide seamless 5G coverage along six major MTR lines*, which means passengers are able to enjoy ultra-fast 5G service on concourses and platforms at more than 50 stations, as well as onboard trains. 1O1O will continue extending 5G overage throughout the rest of the MTR network including West Rail Line, Tung Chung Line, Airport Express Line, South Island Line, Disney Line and High Speed Rail by the end of 2020.

Customers simply need to use a 5G mobile device compatible with 4.9GHz to reap the extraordinary speed and other benefits of 1O1O’s 5G network at locations such as the Hong Kong Science Park and certain areas of Tai Po and Ma On Shan.

1O1O will continue extending 5G coverage throughout Hong Kong, in step with launch of new 5G smartphones this year, while making the many wonders of this amazing new mobile broadband technology readily available to customers.

  • Q1: How will 5G services benefit my daily life?
    Game-changing 5G mobile Internet connectivity will enable 1O1O to make the everyday lives of customers potentially smarter and healthier, as well as more convenient and enjoyable. This ground-breaking technology facilitates higher speeds and lower latency, with the capability to connect exponentially more devices and innovative applications to make the Internet of Things (IoT) and “smart city” concepts a reality.
  • Q2: Will 1O1O command extensive 5G coverage after launch?
    As Hong Kong's leading mobile service operator, we will continue to offer the best customer experience via the fastest connectivity and far-reaching network coverage. Large public locations, such as MTR stations and lines, shopping malls and the airport, demand large capacity to meet a diversity of service requirements. With this in mind, we started building Hong Kong’s first all-fiber mobile network infrastructure in November 2018 for the lobby and platforms of the Shatin to Central Link line in order to provide a high-quality mobile broadband service. This will allow us to upgrade the network to 5G without additional cabling.
  • Q3: What advantages does 1O1O have over other mobile players?
    As Hong Kong’s premier mobile operator, we are able to deliver rich media content in conjunction with PCCW Limited, our parent company. We have also developed a one-stop IoT ecosystem through collaboration with a large group of partners and industry experts. And we established a “smart city” laboratory, in partnership with the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), in November 2018. All these tie-ups will produce a richness of content and innovative 5G services to the benefit of our consumer and corporate customers.
  • Q4: When will 1O1O launch 5G phones? Will 5G mobile phones currently on the market be able to support 5G services?
    Although 5G mobile phones already exist in the market, mobile phones need to be compatible with local 5G network settings. Therefore, these 5G mobile phones is not able to enjoy a faster, more stable and smoother 5G network currently.
  • Q5: Do I need a 5G phone to use the 5G service plan?
    Customers subscribing to a 5G service plan but using a 4G mobile device may not be able to benefit from 5G’s high-speed and low-latency advantages. The user experience will be delivered at 4G speed because of mobile phone restrictions.
  • Q6: How much faster is 5G than 4G?
    5G data transfer speed specificaitons is up to 5 to 20 times faster than 4G's specificaiton. What’s more, 5G achieves ultra-low latency of less than one thousandth of a second.
  • Q7: What spectrum does 1O1O use?
    Our 5G network will use spectrum in the 3.3Ghz, 3.5Ghz, 4.9Ghz and 26/28Ghz bands. In addition, we will refarm existing low-frequency spectrum bands in coming years to enhance 5G network performance.
  • Q8: Why do we need 5G?
    We are all using increasingly more mobile data, especially in terms of video and high-resolution music. The network chokes up when huge numbers of users use it at the same time. One of the many beauties of 5G technology is it will handle demands from massive numbers of devices with comparative ease.
